PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT: CHARACTER AND COMPETENCE

Beyond competence development, there is a need for character development.

We don't just need gifted, talented and intelligent people. We also need people who are honest, humble and 'healthy' in their hearts and minds. Competence makes a person capable, effective and good at what I do. However, character is the real foundation for success that is both worthwhile and sustainable.
Without this dimension of personal growth or development, there will be outgrowths and outbursts of envy, strife, unhealthy competition, malice, slander, scheming, spite, dishonesty, insincerity, cheating, usurping, fraud, offense, insensitivity, pettiness and immaturity even with the abundance of information, knowledge, know-how or skills we have acquired.
We should add virtue to our knowledge otherwise we would have underdeveloped psychologies, insecure personalities, immature emotions or unreliable intentions.

Fact is, we have many times elevated and prioritized our gifts over and above our growth. In a highly competitive world, we are eager to do, perform, achieve, serve or 'shine' without taking time to grow depth, inner strength, character and core values.

We sometimes end up causing more harm than the good intended because there's so much passion but with perhaps a little less wisdom, tact, thoughtfulness, conscience, integrity, humility, love, empathy or character to undergird it. This is the tragedy of premature exposure.
