Simping is just one of the dating trends that exist within many others and was created primarily by Gen-Z culture. 

Simping refers to when someone obsesses over someone else who does not return their affection.

“Simp” is basically an internet slang describing someone who shows excessive sympathy and attention toward another person who does not reciprocate the same feelings, all in a bid to get their affection or a sexual relationship with them.

“Simp” is both a noun and a verb (to “simp over” or “simp for” someone is to engage in simp behavior). 

These days, the most common definition of the noun “simp” seems to be this: a man who throws money or attention at a woman in order to gain her affection, even when his tactics aren't working.

There has been a growing trend in the media of certain individuals being termed as simps, generally recognized as people who engage in costly or extravagant romantic behaviors toward a romantic interest, but are often met with no reciprocation.

So why do men simp?

People may typically simp because they have low self-worth, struggle with anxiety, or are lonely.

A similar word, which may sometimes also be a sign of simping, is pimping: meaning, to make oneself or something more showy or impressive.

A simp will often pimp themselves not because they love or respect themselves but just to impress their crush, love interest or romantic interest.

That’s also why when they lose that relationship, they become so disillusioned and destructive that they no longer take good care of themselves.

Matter of fact, their wounded minds become filled with toxic thoughts of either harming themselves or the other person, even though it is highly irrational.

Ultimately, the root cause of simping and pimping is the same: personal insecurity. 

If you're simping, you are trying to compensate for your low self-esteem by being excessively friendly. 

If you're pimping, you are hiding yourself behind a mask of indifference, flamboyance or false imagery because you dislike the look you see in the mirror.

In summary, the word ‘simp' is a slang for a person (typically a man) who is desperate for the attention and affection of someone else (typically a woman).

It may be a derogatory and satirical coinage from the word: simpleton—meaning, a person who lacks common sense; a foolish or stupid person.
