THE TREACHERY OF MONEY
The treachery of money refers to the potential negative effects that instant financial gains or economic boom can bring upon a person if they are not circumspect, cautious or careful about the immediate influx and influence of seemingly sudden financial abundance in and on their lives.
Simply put, it is the menace and affliction that unguided growth or success can inflict on you.
There are four key aspects and insights to the treachery of money that I will be sharing here.
All of these are as a direct result of the lack of due process or stepwise growth in attaining the particular level or height of success attained.
Going through due process would really accord one the opportunity and necessary time to build capacity to manage the new situation of plenty.
This capacity includes the strength to withstand external pressure of unwholesome factors which come in increasing measure to compete for one’s attention, time, energy and limited resources.
The following are four components of personal and social dysfunction potentially brought about by greatly and immediately increased finances in the life of a naive and inexperienced person.
1. Complacent Frame
This refers to the impact of financial resources on the physical wellbeing or psychological state of a person. Here, the physical frame and mental health of a person who stumbles into monetary abundance is compromised through the intake of excessive (and many times unhealthy) foods, drinks, other products and experiences, some of which can be expensive, unnecessary and even damaging to overall wellbeing. This undermined state impacts on how one looks and feels. This complacency in physical/mental frame also often manifests in the loss of ambition or drive to work hard or to engage in meaningful endeavors, thus leading to lethargic and sedentary behaviors.
2. Careless Frills
This depicts the tendency for a person who has an excessive inflow of disposable money to over indulge in unnecessary entertainment and other forms of pleasure-seeking or false socializing. This subliminal phenomenon is exacerbated by the lure of social attractions and the avalanche of compelling, titillating advertisement stunts and powerful marketing campaigns or imagery.
3. Companionship Fraud
This is a very common and dangerous effect of having money. One will suddenly have an influx of friends and relatives. The attention of people who hitherto neglected you will be suddenly and seriously turned towards you. Some will be good and some will be bad attention or energy that is not truly beneficial to you but rather seeks to be exploitative of you. Friends who show up in fair weather and are absent in the storm are frauds.
4. Conceited Fantasy
This refers to the arrogance and delusion that often accompanies a person who is accidentally thrown into an experience of profuse economic power or prosperity. It is the subtle but severe trap of conceit, pride, vainglory, self-exaltation and the delusion of grandeur. Money, like fame, power or psychoactive substances, can be highly intoxicating and can cause the unguarded mind or the unenlightened soul to become so highly conceited, super arrogant or deeply delusional.
